BattleAtSea Help

Description

BattleAtSea brings the classic naval strategy game to your iPhone and iPod Touch. In this exciting version you can choose to take on the enemy super computer, or challenge your friends in a 1-on-1 LAN battle to the end.

Deploy your carrier battle group of five ships to the the far reaches of a distant ocean, and prepare for war. You must seek and destroy the enemy fleet before they send yours to the depths of the sea.

BattleAtSea is quick, elegant and a blast to play for both the casual gamer, and those with a completive streak. Network play requires a WiFi connection to a Local Area Network, but more multi-player options will be available soon.

Playing

Starting a New Game

From the main menu select New Game.

This will present you with two game types. If you and your opponent are connected to a local wireless network, you may choose Multiplayer and battle it out in a head-to-head match.

To play a solo game against the Computer AI, select Single Player.

In Game Overview

You are presented with two sonar systems. The first of these systems is your Allied Fleet control. From this system you will deploy your fleet and monitor incoming threats. The Targeting System is where you coordinate your offense. Here you plot your strikes and execute your search strategy.

Deploying Your Fleet

Once your sonar systems are powered up, you will need to prepare your deployment strategy in the combat zone.

Pressing the blue Deploy Fleet button will send your carrier battle group a new set of formation orders. You may redeploy the fleet or manually position each ship in the carrier group by moving them into position by touch-and-drag. To rotate a ship's orientation, double-tap the ship, and continue to place your ships as desired.

The Ready Signal

Pressing the green Ready button after your fleet deployment sends your battle group into hostile waters.

If your carrier group detects an enemy presence before the enemy does, you will have the opportunity to attack first. Otherwise it will not take long to be detected and fired upon. Stay ready, and prepare for combat.

Target System

Your computer will automatically switch to the current sonar system. Each ship remaining in your fleet has the opportunity to fire at the enemy battle group. This is known as sortie fire mode. (To use the one-shot-at-a-time Classic mode see the settings tab.)

At first you will need to locate the hidden enemy fleet by strategically firing in the combat zone. Once an enemy ship is located, sink it quickly so it is no longer able to fire at you.

After a targeting solution is plotted, press the red Fire button to initiate the firing sequence and plot the detected results. Your targeting system will show you when you have hit an enemy boat, and when you have missed. Once a boat is sunk, its full sonar signature will be displayed. Use this information to plan your future firing strategies.

Allied Fleet

When you have finished firing, your computer will switch to the Allied Fleet sonar system to monitor for incoming attacks.

Here you will be able to view the success or failure of the enemies targeting strategies and the status of your remaining fleet.

Winning

It may seem simple, but sinking the enemy fleet before they sink yours is anything but. You must hunt and destroy all five boats in the enemies carrier group before they send yours to the depths of the sea.

Don't waste a single shot, or it could mean the difference between victory and defeat.

Main Menu

The main menu is first displayed when BattleAtSea is launched. In addition to starting a battle, you also have access to three other information screens.

  • Help which provides full game documentation including screenshots, and helpful gameplay tips. Help also provides links to other web-based resources provided by Pelted Software.
  • Scores which displays a full complement of Battle Statistics.
  • Settings provides a few game play preferences, including setting your name for use multiplayer games.

Battle Statistics

Accessed from the Scores tab of the main menu, this screen keeps track of your battle history. At the end of each game various stats about the battle are recored. This screen is where the information is tailed and presented for you.

You will find information on:

  1. Total games played
  2. Win / Loss record
  3. Average number of ships remaining when you were victorious
  4. Average hit percentage
  5. A running total hit percentage
  6. Your best accuracy percentage to date

At anytime, you may Reset this history by touching the orange reset button. All history data will be lost.

Settings

The Settings screen is also accessed from the main menu. There are currently four controls to be aware of.

  1. Player name is used when connecting to multiplayer LAN games.
  2. Classic mode is a one-shot-per-turn battle mode. By default this is off, and game play is set to sortie mode which allows each ship remaining in your fleet to fire upon the enemy.
  3. Sound Effect enables and disables the in game sounds. Sounds can also be disabled on the iPhone by switching it into silent mode.
  4. Vibration is available only on the iPhone, and used to alert you when one of the ships in your fleet have been sunk.

Other Information

Multiplayer

Currently only WiFi games on a local area network are available. More options for internet-based play will be available in later free updates.
Both players will need to have WiFi enabled on their iPhone or iPod Touch, and be connected to an access point.

When selecting Multiplayer from the new game menu, you will be prompted to Host or Join a network game.

Currently, BattleAtSea will connect to the first available host it locates on the network. Once connected, each player will be notified of a successful connection. Play then continues as normal.
At this time multiplayer games cannot be resumed, so if one player is unexpectedly interrupted and the connection is lost, the battle will need to be restarted.

Resuming a Previous Game

When playing a Single Player game you may exit the game at any time, and pick up where you left off. When BattleAtSea relaunches, an orange "Continue Last Game" button will be available.

Selecting this will restore the saved game, so you may finish the battle.
